Known as the "Land Above the Mist," Qingjing is one of the most beautiful highland sanctuaries in Taiwan. Due to its high elevation, the area along this route has long been a major producer of alpine flowers, with lilies ranking first in production across Taiwan. Thanks to the excellent environment and climate, the flowers grow beautifully no matter how they’re cultivated. The fresh air and tranquil lifestyle make even a simple stroll through Qingjing a worthwhile reason to visit—let alone enjoying a hearty meal of Yunnan cuisine. The origins of Qingjing’s Paiyi culture can be traced back to the Chinese Civil War era, when many young Dai people from the Yunnan-Burma-Thailand region participated in the war. After the war, the Nationalist government established what is now Qingjing Farm to provide a place for these demobilized veterans and their families to settle and farm. The unique culture of this frontier ethnic group flourished through Paiyi cuisine, and this Yunnan flavor soon swept across Qingjing, becoming a must-try delicacy for all who visit the mountains.

Most of Qingjing’s delicious Paiyi dishes can be found in the new villages of Bowang, Dingyuan, and Shouting. Bowang New Village, home to just over 30 households, is a serene and charming little settlement where most residents make a living by growing alpine flowers. Kindness and diligence define the villagers. Here, with its narrow paths and sounds of chickens and dogs, the atmosphere is one of peace and harmony, making you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. About 300 meters up a small slope near the entrance archway of Bowang New Village stands a quaint and lovely little house. There’s no flashy sign—just a small wooden plaque hung simply on the wall displaying the shop name. This is the highly praised “Lu Ma’s Restaurant.”

With her Paiyi heritage, Lu Ma serves up truly authentic Paiyi dishes. The menu features around ten different options, each prepared using Lu family-secret cooking techniques. From the use of spices and the balance of flavors to the seasoning methods, every dish offers a taste of genuine Paiyi cuisine. When visiting Qingjing in autumn and winter, besides watching the must-see sheep shearing show, don’t forget to head to Bowang New Village and get to know Paiyi culture through your taste buds.
