Marvel at the natural splendor of Mount Bandai and the ever-changing Five Colored Ponds

Just after the bustling New Year’s Day, Japan is enveloped in serene white tranquility. Take a train along the Bandai West Line, and as the houses gradually thin out, the surrounding scenery suddenly opens up. After passing through farmland and a stretch of mountain road, you’ll soon arrive at the Bandai Plateau. The plateau consists of several mountains, the largest of which is “Mount Bandai.” This active volcano, following its eruption, spewed vast amounts of lava that blocked the original river channels, forming over 300 lakes. Due to volcanic activity, some of these lakes display various dreamlike colors, making them quite extraordinary.

Venture deep into the Bandai Plateau and follow the stunning natural trails to reach the most unique natural attraction of Urabandai — the “Five Colored Ponds.” Among the dozen or so marshes formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Bandai, the minerals abundant in the underground springs blend with the colors of the aquatic plants at the bottom, producing mysterious hues such as reddish-brown, bluish-white, and Turkish blue. Each marsh has its own distinctive color, and with the changes of the seasons and the refraction of sunlight, they create a dazzling array of ever-changing shades that are truly mesmerizing.

The volcanically active areas around the Bandai Plateau are home to numerous hot spring resorts. Those farther from the mountains include Bandai Atami Onsen and Inawashiro Onsen, where you can enjoy the pleasure of soaking in the woods. Meanwhile, within the Bandai Plateau itself, there are countless hot springs, most of which are known as “one-building inns,” meaning a single large hot spring hotel occupies an entire hot spring area. Dozens of hot spring ryokan also cluster near the station. Wearing the yukata provided by your inn and strolling along the peaceful, tranquil hot spring streets allows you to fully immerse yourself in quintessential Japanese ambiance.
