This year’s successive cold wave alerts have brought vibrant blooms to plum trees across Taiwan, and the most popular spot for flower viewing is the mountain trails in Xinyi Township, Nantou County. Nantou’s Xinyi Township can be called Taiwan’s capital of plum blossoms. Each winter, plum flowers bloom all over, transforming the hillsides into seas of snowy white petals. The blossoms occasionally drift on the breeze, and the paths through the plum groves are blanketed as if covered in snow, adding to a dreamy, romantic northern atmosphere. Among them, Fengguidou in Ziqiang Village, Xinyi Township, boasts 500 hectares densely planted with plum trees and is the most famous plum blossom destination in Taiwan. The breathtaking plum gardens here attract flower enthusiasts who come to take photos and soak in the scenery.

The majority of plum blossoms in Xinyi Township are ZhiZhi plums. Aside from admiring the blossoms in winter, visitors can also savor an abundant feast of plum-themed dishes, satisfying both the eyes and the palate. With the research and development by local agricultural associations and restaurants, a variety of delicious and aromatic plum dishes have been created—such as plum chicken curry, plum-filled buns, plum-glazed pork ribs, and plum-flavored sake—all unique local specialties.

Aside from the “plum scenery” and “plum cuisine,” Dongpu Hot Springs is another great place to relax in winter. Located next to Yushan National Park and surrounded by high mountains and numerous streams, Dongpu offers stunning views.
