Nighttime Firefly Watching: Alishan’s Glowing Dance Takes Center Stage

Every April and May is firefly season in Alishan. Despite the devastation of Typhoon Morakot last year, this key firefly habitat has shown remarkable resilience, allowing the “2010 Alishan Firefly Festival” to kick off successfully. From now until June 30, the hills are dotted with fireflies shining their starry lights, welcoming visitors to Alishan.

This year, the Alishan Forest Recreation Area has specially planned a “Firefly Release Experience” activity, as well as night guided tours at the Yuantan Nature Ecological Park from April 17 to May 15. These initiatives call on nature lovers to join hands in conserving fireflies and to become “Firefly Angels,” taking practical action to protect these magical creatures.

To encourage public participation, all those who sign up for the Firefly Release Experience will receive one beautifully designed “2010 Dancing with Fireflies Collector’s Edition icash Card,” symbolizing the eternal glow of the fireflies’ life force. Additionally, during the event period, visitors staying overnight in Alishan can request a “2010 Dancing with Fireflies Collector’s icash Card” raffle ticket from local accommodations. The raffle operates on an accumulated basis, with 80 winners drawn every three weeks starting from the launch, totaling five draws and 400 prizes. Participating lodgings include: in Rueili area—Yipin Tea Leaf Homestay, Wild Ginger Flower Resort, Rueili Teapot Homestay, Rueili Impressions Homestay, Ah Ben’s Home Homestay, Ruolan Mountain Villa, Mingyuan Tea Leaf Homestay, Ah Han’s Home Homestay, and Songzhai Eco Homestay; in Ruifeng area—Yafang Homestay; in Fenchihu area—Fenchihu Hotel and Yaomei Mountain Villa; in Fengshan area—Fengbin Mountain Villa, Mingyue Mountain Villa, Maple Leaf Mountain Villa, and Fengji Hotel.

Alishan boasts a rich firefly ecosystem, and many homestays and hotels have organized firefly-watching activities. For example, near the Kuantu Abana Ecological Trail opposite Kaiyuan Farm in Chashan area, visitors can spot numerous fireflies, with nearly ten species observable. Those interested in learning more about firefly ecology can ask the farm owner for a guided tour, gaining deeper insight into these fascinating insects while enjoying the view.
