Visit Matsu to see terns, explore villages, and discover a maritime paradise
Most people’s impression of Matsu remains rooted in its military heritage and Minnan-style architecture, but in recent years, the rare Chinese crested tern has become the biggest draw for visitors to Matsu. In fact, many birdwatchers from Europe and America are willing to spend over NT$100,000 just to see this “mythical bird” in Matsu. Earlier this summer, the Chinese crested tern returned to Matsu once again, kicking off the annual tourism season on the islands.

The “2010 Matsu Tern Watching Season” will kick off in June. The highlight of this year’s tern watching event is the creative planning led by Lienchiang County Government and Matsu National Scenic Area Administration, which guides visitors on an emotional eco-journey through Matsu. During the event, tern-watching boats will depart every Saturday and Sunday at 09:00 from Fu’ao Harbor in Nangan. With limited spots available or by private charter, the routes include Zhongdao, Baimiao, Tiejian, Liulian, and other conservation areas, offering experiences themed around the “Fairyland of Birds.”
The tern-watching trips also incorporate other ecological resources, such as the “Big Wu Eco-Tour” where you can spot Formosan sika deer, or the astonishing “Sea View of Dongyin.” Guided by professional interpreters, these sea voyages allow you to admire Matsu’s unique granite landforms, Minnan-style villages, and even catch and enjoy freshly cooked sand shrimp—all for a fee ranging from NT$350 to NT$700 per person.
The grandeur of the nation’s northern frontier
June to August is the best time to go birdwatching in Matsu. This year’s tern watching season breaks away from the traditional military image, focusing on ecology and connecting sea and land routes. Travel agencies including Zion, Namiko, Caifenglu, Shanlin International, Crazy Horse, Leisurely, Yirong International, and Xingya, as well as local Matsu agencies like Bamin, Mitsubishi, and Matsu Sanlin, have all launched package tours. These cater to both independent travelers and groups, offering the chance to admire terns soaring over the sea and to take in the sights of Beigan, Juguang, Dongyin, and nearby islets and reefs.
