Nantou produces great tea, challenging the Guinness World Record with a thousand-person tea party
Taiwanese tea is famous worldwide. Not only can you enjoy different varieties in every season, but it’s also the essential souvenir that foreign visitors bring back — aromatic tea leaves full of sweet fragrance. Nantou’s Yuchi Township, known for growing the Assam black tea beloved by Japan’s royal family, once wrote a glorious chapter in Taiwan’s tea history. To this day, it continues to pass down the expertise of tea-farming families, cultivating tea leaves rich in deep flavor.
Savor a sip of sweetly fragrant, high-quality tea
To successfully promote Nantou tea, the Nantou County Government specially held the “2010 Nantou World Tea Expo” in Zhongxing New Village, inviting over 10 countries including China, Japan, South Korea, and the United States to participate. This aimed to promote Nantou tea brands globally and let more people learn about tea cultures from around the world. On June 19th, the opening day of the event, a thousand-person tea party will be held at the large field in Zhongxing New Village, attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the most people brewing tea together at one time.
Tea is an important agricultural specialty product of Nantou County. The “Taiwan Tea Art Expo,” which began in 2002, launched the Tea Fragrance Health Festival. In June 2006, the first “Taiwan Best Tea Competition” organized by the Taiwan Tea Merchants Association saw Nantou County win the honor of “Taiwan’s No.1 Best Tea.” To prevent Nantou tea brands or names from being counterfeited or misused, a production area certification system was implemented in Lugu starting in 2007. Only tea grown in Lugu Township, with pesticide residues meeting food safety standards and roasted to a certain quality level, can receive the certification.

This year’s nine-day “World Tea Expo” will take place simultaneously across multiple venues, including Zhongxing Hall, Hushan Farm, the Youth Activity Center, and surrounding plazas. The event includes not only static exhibitions on the history and achievements of tea culture and displays of Taiwan’s top ten specialty teas, but also live tea tastings, tea desserts, tea art demonstrations, and sales exhibitions of Nantou’s agricultural specialty products. The Tea Art Expo has also invited major tea regions from China’s Hangzhou, Fujian, and other areas, as well as tea pavilion displays and tea ceremony performances from over 10 countries, including Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, and India, showcasing the unique tea cultures of each nation. In addition, there will be fun tea art competitions and lucky draw activities for purchases over a certain amount, along with packaged tour packages including experiences in the county’s three major tea towns, leisure travel, and special tea-flavored gourmet meals.
