Become Dae Jang Geum herself: Experience Korean traditional medicine at Changdeokgung’s in-palace hospital

Many tourists visiting Korea make it a point to experience the fun of the drama at the MBC Dae Jang Geum Theme Park. This year, the Cultural Heritage Administration’s Changdeokgung Management Office, the Association of Korean Oriental Medicine, and the Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation have joined hands to launch a Korean traditional medicine experience program, allowing visitors to explore the peninsula’s ancient medical heritage.

Many tourists visiting Korea make it a point to experience the fun of the drama at the MBC Dae Jang Geum Theme Park. This year, the Cultural Heritage Administration’s Changdeokgung Management Office, the Association of Korean Oriental Medicine, and the Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation have joined hands to launch a Korean traditional medicine experience program, allowing visitors to explore the peninsula’s ancient medical heritage.

The Korean traditional medicine experience will be held every Thursday from 13:30 to 17:00 between now and June 24, and again from September 2 to October 28, at the in-palace hospital within Seoul’s Changdeokgung. The free program includes Korean herbal medical consultations and a variety of visitor experience activities. These activities include making herbal medicine packets, grinding herbs using traditional methods, sketching illustrations from the Dongui Bogam (a classic Korean medical text), and sitting on the wooden floor of an annex building to enjoy Korean herbal tea. Visitors can even take home the medicine packets they made as souvenirs.

Built in 1405, Changdeokgung has served as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty since its reconstruction in 1609, and is the most well-preserved palace complex of the dynasty. The classic royal architecture and traditional landscaped gardens carry an indescribable charm. Experiencing traditional Korean medicine within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Changdeokgung offers a uniquely nostalgic atmosphere—as if you’ve stepped into the shoes of the sensitive and skilled Dae Jang Geum herself.

This experience program is open to general visitors to Changdeokgung. Licensed oriental medicine doctors affiliated with the Association of Korean Oriental Medicine wear traditional physician attire to provide services such as pulse diagnosis, acupuncture, and moxibustion. Only 40 visitors are allowed per day (30 Koreans and 10 foreigners), and appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested tourists are advised to arrive early at Changdeokgung to queue or inquire.
