In the Land of the Mahatma: Discover the Beauty of Indian Culture at the National Library

India, a country with distinct racial and caste systems, emerged over 2,500 years BCE as one of the world's four great ancient civilizations. Thanks to the "BRICs" nations, combined with its ancient civilization, Buddhist relics, sacred Ganges sites, and unique ethnic charm, it attracts visitors from around the globe. This year marks the 60th anniversary of India’s independence. To promote knowledge services and international cultural exchange, the National Library, in collaboration with the India-Taipei Association, has organized the “Exquisite Indian Culture Exhibition.” The exhibition features UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India, Buddhist sacred places, photographic works from Gandhi’s life, as well as contemporary classic Indian publications.

Gandhi, who advocated for nonviolent resistance and led India to independence, was born in Porbandar, Gujarat—a small port city that, like many Indian urban centers, boasts bustling and vibrant streets. At the age of 19, Gandhi traveled to England to receive a Western education but ultimately returned to embrace Indian culture wholeheartedly. A single train ticket set him on the arduous journey toward India’s independence and influenced global movements for peaceful change.

Before the 18th century, Indian civilization had already flourished in extraordinary richness, especially in religion, mathematics, and medicine, exerting vast influence across Asia. The “Exquisite Indian Culture Exhibition” at the National Library showcases India’s ancient Buddhist civilization and the relentless struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi through images and archival media. It also displays contemporary Indian historical, geographical, and cultural publications, presenting the refined culture of India’s historical development and allowing the public to appreciate the exquisite beauty of diverse human civilizations.

The “Exquisite Indian Culture Exhibition” is divided into three major themes: “The Path of Compassion,” which, through the lens of renowned photographer Benoy K. Behl, introduces viewers to key sites including Buddha’s birthplace, enlightenment, first sermon, and final nirvana. The exhibits include ancient Buddhist art from both Hinayana and Mahayana traditions. The section “A Century of Life” selects 100 photos covering major historical events in the life of the Mahatma, fully conveying his spiritual journey in the pursuit of truth. The “Book Journey” part features a special donation by the India-Taipei Association to the National Library: over a hundred publications covering Indian politics, economy, society, culture, figures, and daily life, showcasing its diverse characteristics and facets, which will also be displayed.

The “Exquisite Indian Culture Exhibition” runs from now until July 18, open every Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 in the Cultural and Educational Exhibition Hall of the National Library. Those wishing to delve deeper into the profound essence of Indian culture shouldn’t miss it.
