The enchanting Taipei, the 12th Taipei Arts Festival
Entering its 12th year, the Taipei Arts Festival consistently offers the public a diverse and high-quality arts and culture experience. Last year, it attracted as many as 220,000 participants. This year’s Taipei Arts Festival, themed “Art That Enchants,” features a carefully curated selection of six local groups, three international troupes, large-scale outdoor public art exhibitions, and multiple lecture events, making Taipei very “artsy” in August and September.

The opening production, "Hey, Girls!" is directed by Romeo Castellucci, the Artistic Director of the 2008 Avignon Festival, and is a powerful piece centered on female consciousness that caused a stir when it premiered in Avignon. "Things of Steven" is a highly unique theatrical performance without any actors—relying solely on visuals, music, murmurs, and novel texts to directly address the devastation of industrialism on nature. The absurd comedy "Waiting for Wo Wo Tou: The Great Escape of Yuan Yuan," created by the emerging theater group "Four Chairs Theatre," which received an enthusiastic response at the Taipei Fringe Festival, is set to spark discussion again.
Meanwhile, Wu Shi-wei, the winner of the Taipei Film Festival’s Best Screenplay award, will present "Mint, Rosemary and Unknown Flowers," examining modern romantic relationships. The large-scale musical "Michael Jackson" by the "Shakespeare’s Wild Sisters Group" pays tribute to the legendary superstar through a spectacular performance. The "Musical Theater Era" presents "Spring Breeze Over Wei-Shui," set during the Japanese colonial period, allowing audiences to experience the patriotic sentiments of their forebears. "The Paper-Cutting Man," produced by the "No One is an Island Theatre Troupe," continues the unique aesthetic of puppet manipulation, creating a distinctive style through light and shadow changes. Master artist Robert Lepage brings his long-awaited "Voices in the Dark," a nearly nine-hour seamless performance that even Cloud Gate Dance Theatre founder Lin Hwai-min has highly praised.

In addition, 2010 marks the "Schumann Year," the 200th anniversary of the death of the musical master Schumann. The former Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra will personally perform his "A Poet's Love," singing classic works together with German tenor Tilman Lichdi.
