Asia’s Best Beach: Koh Rong Island Developed by Cambodia’s Royal Group
The Royal Group of Cambodia, one of the country’s most important investment companies, is planning to develop Koh Rong Island into a “fairy-tale-like” destination, turning this untouched area into Asia’s first eco-friendly resort.

For decades, Koh Rong has remained isolated from the outside world, preserving its pristine natural landscape — including coral reefs, tropical palm forests, rainforests, waterfalls, sparkling blue waters, and 28 pure white beaches. Among them, a stunning six-kilometer-long beach stands out as one of the most spectacular and was once named one of “Asia’s Best Beaches” by the international business magazine Forbes.

The Royal Group is a sizable enterprise in Cambodia, with operations spanning telecommunications, media, banking, insurance, resorts, education, property, trade, and agriculture. It has been granted a 99-year lease by the government to develop Koh Rong. The planned development includes an international airport just under an hour’s flight from Bangkok and about two hours from Hong Kong and Singapore. The island will also feature a golf course and a harbor, providing services for ferries, equipment and supply shipments, and work vessels. A separate independent dock will serve resort boats, yachts, and cruise ships, and will house boutiques, restaurants, and bars.
