The Beauty of Non-Mainstream Independent Art: The 3rd Taipei Fringe Festival 2010
In this city, mainstream performances aren’t the only thing around—there’s also a wealth of alternative performing arts waiting to be discovered and to move us. With an attitude of connecting with the audience, performers embody the spirit of the Fringe Festival. Over the 16 days from August 28 to September 12, diverse artistic creations will be shared with the public, showcasing the multifaceted face of culture.
The Fringe Festival originated from the Edinburgh Festival in the UK in 1947, where participants proudly called themselves "Fringe" and quickly gained popularity. Having developed for over 60 years, it has become the largest and most popular arts festival in the world. The spirit of the Fringe Festival is to adopt an open and free policy in accepting performance groups. Participating performers are not selected through competition, making it a brand-new platform for young artists. Audiences who choose to attend Fringe Festival shows also embrace a lot of fun and adventure—and they might just witness tomorrow’s stars.

This year’s Fringe Festival brings together 70 performing groups from all over Taiwan, Singapore, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, involving more than 2,500 young artists. From “Guling–Nanhai” to “Ximending–Mengjia,” from “Rainbow 3C–Art Village” to “School Special Zone,” and even venturing into the “Nanshi” Special Zone, performances will take place across five major zones and 21 alternative creative venues, staging 254 fantastic shows waiting for you to enjoy.
