Chinese travelers to Canada are in luck!* Just recently, the EU included Taiwan in its list of visa-exempt countries, and on 11/22, the Canadian government officially announced that it will allow Taiwanese citizens to enter Canada for up to six months without a visa. This policy will save travelers the usual CAD 2,100 visa fee per trip, with an estimated nationwide saving of CAD 450 million in Canadian visa fees annually — great news for students and tourists alike.

Starting now, holders of Republic of China passports can enjoy up to six months of visa-free entry to Canada for “non-work purposes.” As a result, those going to Canada to study languages or undertake short-term courses for no more than six months will no longer need to apply separately for a student visa. According to statistics, around 2,300 people went to Canada for study or travel last year, and this new policy is expected to spark a surge in study-abroad trips to Canada.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Taiwan currently enjoys visa-free entry to 38 countries, while 21 countries offer visa-on-arrival for Republic of China passport holders, with permitted stays ranging from 7 to 180 days. Adding Canada and the 28 Schengen Area countries brings the total to 88 visa-exempt destinations. The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei stated that this move will promote greater business, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges between Canada and Taiwan.
