For independent travelers, the convenience of public transportation such as trains is very important. Fortunately, on December 4, 2010, the Tohoku Shinkansen will be fully opened along its entire route. Travelers can go directly from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori in just 3 hours and 20 minutes. The newly added stations are “Nanbu-Towada” Station and “Shin-Aomori” Station. With this, it will also become more convenient for independent travelers to connect to Hirosaki and Lake Towada. Why not take a trip to Aomori, the northernmost part of Honshu, and explore the unknown charm of Japan?
Hirosaki Castle is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in northeastern Aomori.
If you plan to visit the captivating Aomori, it is most practical and convenient to purchase the “JR East Pass,” which allows unlimited rides within the JR East Japan region. Aomori, known for its “apples,” hosts the must-see “Aomori Nebuta Festival” in August. Hirosaki, famous for its cherry blossom-viewing destination Hirosaki Castle, is also nearby. In addition, you can travel directly from Shin-Aomori Station through the Seikan Tunnel to Hakodate in Hokkaido.
The Oirase Gorge, which flows out from Lake Towada, features well-developed walking trails along the stream, stretching 14 km, and attracts many tourists during the autumn foliage season.
Nanbu-Towada Station serves as a transportation hub from which you can visit Lake Towada and the Oirase Gorge, both offering stunning natural scenery in all four seasons; Mount Hakkoda, where you can enjoy hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter; as well as the Shimokita Peninsula, the northernmost part of Honshu, which retains its pristine natural landscape.
