The wind band movement in the Chiayi area has garnered enthusiastic responses from local citizens for decades. The “First Wind Band Festival” kicked off in 1993 (the 82nd year of the Republic of China), blending music with art. Starting with just five participating groups, in recent years the festival has seen hundreds of outstanding domestic and international ensembles vying for performance slots. This year’s edition, themed “Classics,” bridges the past and present, and will run for 10 days from December 24, 2010, to January 2, 2011.

The Wind Band Festival features both “static exhibitions,” such as indoor and outdoor concerts, wind instrument and sheet music displays, music lectures, and art markets, as well as “dynamic activities” like wind band parades, creative street performances, formation changes, and New Year’s Eve countdown parties—making for an exciting and colorful program. International groups from Japan, China, Singapore, the Philippines, Germany, Thailand, South Korea, and more join top ensembles from across Taiwan in taking turns to perform, adding even more vibrancy to Chiayi.

In addition to performances, large-scale installation artworks with wind band themes are set up in urban public spaces, allowing residents to experience the city’s wind band spirit at any time. This year’s highlight is the “Wind Band Chicken” standing tall in Cultural Park, serving as the festival’s mascot representative and conveying the concept of “a cultural city and the capital of wind bands.” The festival takes place at the Chiayi City Cultural Center and Zhongzheng Park in Chiayi City.
