In Taiwan, New Year’s Eve sunrise events are usually held at scenic spots known for sunrises or aim to catch the first light of dawn across the country. The same applies abroad, with South Korea alone offering at least six different sunrise New Year celebrations, and the first light of dawn will appear at “Huwelchon,” where a large-scale sunrise festival is held annually, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

Located at the easternmost tip of the Korean Peninsula, Huwelchon is the first place in South Korea to see the sunrise. Even outside the festival period, it often attracts many tourists. The unique statue near the beach is quite famous. The “Hands of Symbiosis” statues, symbolizing the sunrise festival, are placed on land and in the sea respectively—the one on land is the left hand, and the one in the sea is the right hand, representing mutual support and coexistence among all citizens.

The sunrise festival will run from the evening of December 31st to the early morning of January 1st, featuring various performances such as regional cultural shows, New Year’s welcoming events, fireworks displays, and sunrise concerts. There’s also a special event called “Making 10,000 Rice Cakes,” where you can taste free New Year rice cakes, fly kites, and tie your new year’s wishes to balloons before releasing them into the sky. This carries the meaning of reflecting on the past year and starting a hopeful new one.
