High-speed rail tickets for the 2011 Lunar New Year go on presale starting January 4

To meet travelers’ demands for returning home, visiting family, and traveling during the Lunar New Year holiday, Taiwan High Speed Rail will operate 307 additional trains during the 2011 Lunar New Year transport period (from January 31 to February 8, 2011)—155 southbound and 152 northbound—making a total of 1,470 trains over the nine days, providing 1,453,830 seats. This represents a 26.4% increase in transport capacity compared to the regular schedule. Starting from Tuesday, January 4, 2011, both group and individual passengers can make reservations. From midnight on the 4th, passengers can use the 24-hour online booking system, the automated voice reservation service, or purchase tickets at convenience stores to book both outbound and return trips for the entire Lunar New Year holiday in advance.

With large crowds expected to take the high-speed rail home, the public should pay early attention to ticketing information.

Considering that passengers traveling during the Lunar New Year holiday often carry more luggage, to ensure service quality throughout the holiday period, Taiwan High Speed Rail will implement an assigned-seating-only policy and suspend the non-reserved seating option on all trains during the Spring Festival transport period. Passengers holding monthly passes or multi-ride tickets are requested to purchase assigned seats separately for travel.

According to Taiwan High Speed Rail’s plans, during peak hours of passenger traffic in the Spring Festival transport period, up to six trains per hour will run in each direction. On February 5 (the third day of the Lunar New Year) and February 7 (the fifth day), a total of 175 trains will run in both directions, marking the highest number of trains operated in a single day during the holiday period and also setting a record for the highest daily number of trains since the line began operations.

Taiwan High Speed Rail’s ticket discounts and operational services for the 2011 Lunar New Year holiday transport period are as follows: The 10% discount on specified train services will be available until January 31 (Monday). Therefore, passengers purchasing tickets for trains departing at or after 9:00 PM on the same day can still enjoy a 10% discount on standard-class assigned-seat full fares. In addition, the “Winter Vacation College Student Commuting and Return Discount Program” does not apply during the Lunar New Year transport period. For passengers holding multi-ride or monthly passes, due to the suspension of non-reserved seating services between January 31 and February 8 during the Spring Festival transport period, Taiwan High Speed Rail will automatically extend the validity period of their benefits based on the number of affected days.
