Tribal Cultural Heritage: A Special Exhibition of Works Created After Typhoon Morakot

Throughout Taiwan, there are many long-established tribes that are worth preserving as the foundation of Taiwan’s development. However, Typhoon Morakot in 2009 brought significant disaster to the Eastern Paiwan people. Thanks to the efforts of the National Museum of Prehistory, 12 rescued wooden relief artifacts and precious works were displayed at the Eslite Bookstore Taitung Story House from January 1 to February 8, 2011, allowing the public to bear witness to this once-in-a-century disaster.

‘Babu- zangal (Self-help and Mutual Help) — The Plan for Emotional and Educational Recovery and a Special Exhibition of Artworks for the Kalan Village After Typhoon Morakot’ begins with the cultural damage caused by the typhoon, linking the rescue of artifacts to the reconstruction of culture. The post-disaster self-help and mutual-help artistic creations by tribal members help preserve tribal culture and continue the wisdom of their ancestors. The special exhibition also features wood carvings and pottery works created by artists such as Luo Zhongzao, Mai Chengshan, and Lin Xinyi.

Babu-zangal represents the wisdom of the Eastern Paiwan people in facing major disasters, as well as the courage and support that has sustained the tribe’s life and heritage for thousands of years. Traditionally, the community has had a social mechanism of mutual assistance. In normal times, such as during house building or work, tribe members support each other with manpower. In emergencies, they demonstrate the spirit of mutual aid, helping themselves first before seeking rescue and assistance from the tribe and external sources. The public is welcome to experience the unique Babu- zangal (self-help and mutual help) spirit of the tribes.
