In the chilly winter, a bowl of hot soup brings immense comfort. Convenience store ready-to-eat meals continue to innovate, aiming to satisfy diverse consumer palates. Japan’s national comfort food—oden—has been constantly updated in Taiwanese convenience stores, with some consumers even making it a full meal. Light yet guilt-free, Uni-President Enterprises recently announced the launch of two new oden broths: “Sichuan Spicy” and “Collagen,” adding more delicious choices to oden offerings.

Uni-President Enterprises recently announced the launch of two new oden broths—“Sichuan Spicy” and “Collagen.”

Each of these two broths is priced at NT$10. The “Sichuan Spicy” broth is brewed with Dahongpao peppercorns, chickenheart chili, Erjingtiao chili, and over ten types of Chinese medicinal herbs. The “Collagen” broth is made by simmering pork bone stock for six hours and contains 1,000mg of collagen, catering to beauty-conscious female consumers. Oden comes in over 30 varieties, and besides pairing with the two new broths, you can also choose oden-specific noodles and agar yuki. To celebrate the launch of the new broths, until February 8, buy four pieces of oden and get one free packet of broth in your choice of flavor.

Uni-President’s ready-to-eat meals generated a total output value of NT$18.8 billion in 2011, with potential to reach NT$20 billion in 2011. In 2010, ready-to-eat meals accounted for 16.5% of Uni-President’s overall revenue, and this is expected to rise to 17% in 2011. Among them, oden accounts for about 10% of ready-to-eat meal sales, growing by approximately 50% over the past three years.

Hot and hearty oden has become the go-to full meal for many consumers.

To meet consumer demand for ready-to-eat meals, Uni-President Enterprises will invest NT$200 million this year to build a brand-new oden production facility, officially positioning oden as a main meal option (with purchase proportion reaching 40%).
