RL, a new French restaurant in Zhongli that opened last May, serves handmade burgers and French pastries. Its sleek black-and-white minimalist interior has garnered significant popularity on Instagram in just over half a year since opening.

RL opens at 12:30 PM on weekdays, and we arrived 10 minutes earlier than expected—but even then, there were already several groups of customers waiting outside. As soon as we walked in, the left side of the space was white-themed, featuring an ordering counter, a pastry display, and a few white tables and chairs. The walls were adorned with large neon signs of eggbeaters and cutlery, which reminded me of the neon English lettering in Seoul cake shops (Click here for the Seoul cake shop article←), though RL’s designs were even cuter and more creative.

The right side of RL was black-themed, with high-top seating for larger groups and a semi-open kitchen where you could watch the chefs busy at work. The whole space was divided into black and white zones, and while most guests chose the white seating area, we were drawn to the black side.

%techstrong>Beef Burger with French Mustard Sauce – NT$380 / Includes handmade fries and a soda
Features beef, Brie cheese, tender beet leaves, béarnaise sauce, and French mustard.

The bun at RL was delightfully chewy with a fragrant aroma. The rich and creamy béarnaise sauce paired perfectly with the beef, topped with a slice of cheese—where the meatiness met the creaminess. Both the top and bottom buns were coated with a touch of French mustard, offering a mildly sweet and tangy flavor without being overpowering. Overall, the French mustard beef burger had a refreshing taste, with the beef cooked to just the right tenderness.

The fries at RL were made from freshly sliced potatoes. They arrived hot, crispy, and irregularly flat-shaped. With a flavor profile that was 70% sweet and 30% salty, they paired well with optional sauces (BBQ or ketchup). We recommend eating them while they’re hot—as they cool down quickly and become soggy.

Afterthoughts:
Both J and I really liked RL’s space—it was simple, modern, and airy with a stylish vibe. The seating was quite comfortable, though the white two-seater area might feel a bit cramped. The savory burger sets came with soda and fries, and while the flavors and textures were great, the price was on the higher side. The shop also offers seasonal French pastries, but we were too full from the burger and our late 10 AM breakfast to try them—next time, perhaps.
