Massive installation art creates stunning butterfly visuals as Macao MGM’s Flutter Pavilion debuts in May

Beyond entertainment, the Ruins of St. Paul’s, and milk tarts, visitors to Macao can now enjoy the mesmerizing sight of over a hundred butterfly species in flight. The first large-scale butterfly ecology exhibition in Macao, “Fluttering Butterflies at MGM Macao,” will kick off in May. At the heart of the event is the Flutter Pavilion located in the center of the Sky Roof Plaza, where 60 iPads showcase the graceful dance of butterflies, complemented by large-scale butterfly installation art for a vibrant and luxurious visual experience.

This “Fluttering Butterflies at MGM Macao” exhibition consists of multiple installation artworks, including the Flutter Pavilion at the center of the Sky Roof Plaza. With a diameter of about 8 meters and a height of approximately 6.4 meters, the pavilion’s design draws inspiration from the geodesic dome structures created by the late American architect Buckminster Fuller, the father of the short-range domes. Inside, 60 iPads project dreamlike artistic imagery of fluttering butterflies. Surrounding the Flutter Pavilion are three giant windmill steel trees, each weighing about 1.3 tons and crafted from 16 kilometers of steel wire. Hundreds of delicate windmills on the trees gently rotate amid a backdrop of blooming flowers and colorful butterflies. Coupled with the light-and-shadow effects of the central water spheres and the soothing sound of flowing water, the scene is truly captivating.

The exhibition runs from May to October. Visitors can observe the butterfly emergence process in the butterfly eclosion room, witnessing the magical moment when butterflies break out of their chrysalises, and can even exchange butterfly knowledge with expert Dr. Wu Yun. Additionally, while resting on the curved white benches of the Sky Roof Plaza, you can look up to see giant decorations of monarch butterflies, birdwing butterflies, and paradise butterflies seemingly soaring above the plaza. Their translucent bodies shimmer against the vibrant colors of the Flutter Pavilion, sparkling brilliantly under the sunlight.
