The Beauty of Seashells Moves to Tainan This Summer—Listen to the Melody of the Ocean

The “Beauty of Seashells” special exhibition, which was previously displayed at the Chiayi Municipal Museum and attracted over 50,000 visitors, will be relocated to the Tainan Cailiao Fossil Museum from now until September 23. It covers multiple themes including “The Natural Beauty of Seashells,” “Seashells in Human Culture,” “Special Mollusks—Giant, Strange, Rare, and Living Fossils,” “3D Live Footage of Dragon’s Palace Shells,” “Sounds of the Ocean—Listen to Seashells,” and “Touch Experience Zone for Seashells.” With over 300 exhibits on display, residents in southern Taiwan will have the opportunity to learn about the role mollusks play in the ecosystem.

Fang Jianneng, Associate Researcher of the Collection Management Division at the National Taiwan Museum, said that among mollusks, the most famous living fossils are the nautilus and the dragon’s palace triton shell, both of which have long evolutionary histories. Since the Mesozoic era, they have left behind numerous fossils in strata. The “Living Fossils” section will feature beautifully preserved specimens from the museum’s collection. Meanwhile, the “Natural Beauty of Seashells” section will present the elegant forms of seashells through subtopics such as their graceful spiral shapes, symmetrical beauty, diverse colorful patterns, intricately carved textures, and noble pearl-like luster. The “Seashells in Human Culture” section will introduce how mollusks have held significant roles in human culture throughout history, especially in food, clothing, housing, religious beliefs, and art and crafts. This includes a variety of artistic designs and crafts made from shells, such as the sacred conch and the conch trumpet featured in religious beliefs and legends in India.
