The most recommended Taiwanese delicacies by locals: bubble tea and stinky tofu make the list

According to a survey conducted by a global online hotel booking website among 27,000 travelers worldwide, Italy and France, both renowned food nations, took the top two spots in the global ranking of the best culinary destinations. Meanwhile, Japan’s refined dining culture is gradually setting trends, combining delicious ingredients with an exceptional dining atmosphere, earning it the third spot. Taiwan also made it into the top ten, tying with India for ninth place.

Taiwan is famed for its rich and diverse street food culture, making it the top choice for Taiwanese as the ultimate snack paradise (28%), and also ranking as the ninth-best food destination in the eyes of global travelers (5%). Bubble milk tea (58%), stinky tofu (43%), and salt and pepper chicken (39%) were selected as the top three must-recommend local snacks for foreign visitors. Meanwhile, the well-known Taiwanese celebrity chef, Chef Ah Ji, was overwhelmingly voted the most suitable celebrity to represent Taiwanese street food (74%). As for the domestic city most recommended by Taiwanese people for foreign visitors to explore, the capital city Taipei received the most recommendations (31%), thanks to its diverse food culture and vibrant nightlife options, allowing foreign visitors to fully experience Taipei’s unique urban charm. Notably, in this ranking of culinary nations, Mainland China came in fourth, ahead of popular tourist destinations such as Spain, the United States, Mexico, and Thailand, indicating that Chinese cuisine is gradually gaining popularity around the world.

Additionally, the survey results also showed the countries Taiwanese people most frequently visit for tourism are, in order, Japan (46%), China (41%), and Hong Kong (35%). Japan, known for its friendly travel environment and attentive service, was further chosen by Taiwanese travelers as the country where they feel most at home (32%) and the destination with the best local cuisine (54%). As a result, Japan is the top travel destination of choice for Taiwanese people.
