The Only Platonic Love in Music History: Tchaikovsky’s "Romance" Debuts in Taichung

Tchaikovsky’s life, filled with legendary love stories, will be presented through his "Serenade," "Violin Concerto," and the classical ballet interpretation by Taipei Chamber Ballet. The performance will take place tomorrow (4th) evening at 19:30 at Taichung’s Zhongshan Hall. The dance performance is choreographed by Yu Nengsheng, deputy artistic director of the Graz Opera Ballet in Austria, and features soloists Canila Bogdan Stefan and Djmaru Cristina Alexandra from the Romanian National Ballet, along with domestic dancers Cheng Youci, Liao Yi, Gao Yongyu, Zhuang Shixian, and Lin Boru. Combining Tchaikovsky’s poignant and romantic music with classical ballet, the show will depict five major chapters of his life—his familial bonds, friendships, and romantic experiences—including the unique, 13-year platonic relationship between Tchaikovsky and Madame von Meck, who never met in person, a truly singular romance in music history.

The renowned Russian composer Tchaikovsky, whose music often carried a touch of melancholy, also led a life filled with legendary romantic tales. Many of his compositions were inspired by various emotional experiences. This ballet focuses on Tchaikovsky’s life, portraying his encounters with familial love, friendship, romance, and even rumored same-sex affection, structured into the following chapters: "Beloved Mother"—dependent love, "Woman"—longed-for love, "Marriage"—love without fruition, "Madame von Meck"—platonic love, and "Same Sex"—idealized love.

The relationship between Tchaikovsky and Madame von Meck began in 1877 and spanned thirteen years, during which they exchanged over 1,100 letters discussing music, musicians, religion, and their inner thoughts. Madame von Meck came to understand Tchaikovsky’s financial struggles and admired his musical talent, leading her to offer him an annual stipend of 6,000 rubles—equivalent to over NT$2.7 million today—on the condition that they never meet. With this financial support, Tchaikovsky devoted himself to composition, dedicating his Symphony No. 4, completed in 1878, to Madame von Meck. However, in 1890, she announced her impending bankruptcy and had to cease her support, cutting off all correspondence after thirteen years. Deeply affected, Tchaikovsky completed his Symphony No. 6 in 1893 before passing away due to illness.

Beyond his famous ballets like *Swan Lake*, *The Sleeping Beauty*, and *The Nutcracker*, Tchaikovsky composed many other works suitable for dance. For this production, the "Serenade" and "Violin Concerto" were chosen to convey the boundless imagination of his music, expressed through the elegant and graceful lines of classical ballet, enhanced by dramatic tension, to interpret Tchaikovsky’s emotional journey.
