Handmade Taro Delicacies | Explore the New Way to Experience Taichung with Earth Oven Experiences

When traveling in Taichung, besides Fengjia Night Market, the Qiji Department Store commercial district, and the mountain scenery of Xinshe, six distinctive local communities — Dajia, Da’an, Shige, Heping, Waipu, and the South District — have each planned six in-depth cultural tours, allowing tourists to discover a more diverse side of Taichung. The itineraries include rural earth oven experiences, searching for Da’an’s water shield plants, experiencing the Dongfeng Green Corridor, foraging and cooking with ingredients from the Daxue Mountain area, visiting farmer’s markets, and touring the Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park. A total of 10 sessions will be held from August 11 to October 20, each limited to 40 participants. Options include one-day trips and two-day, one-night stays. Registration is now open, with fees ranging from NT$200 to NT$1,700.

The six routes include Dajia—Exploring Farming and Fishing Fun, Da’an—A Leisurely Tour of Countryside Scenery, Shige—Urban-Rural Joint Adventures, Heping—Exploring the Natural Ecology of Daxue Mountain, Waipu—Discovering the Beauty of Hujiao Village, and South District—Joyful City God Temple Tour. Among them, the Da’an countryside route will be led by local experts in sweet potatoes, carvings, calligraphy, and master chefs, introducing visitors to local traditional industries and guiding DIY activities such as green onion crafts. The Shige urban-rural journey not only allows cycling along the Dongfeng Green Corridor to enjoy the scenic views but also includes a visit to the Tuniu Hakka Cultural Museum, which was rebuilt on-site to resemble its original form after the 921 earthquake.

In the well-known coastal area of Dajia District, besides the famous Zhenlan Temple attraction, visitors will also use local ingredients to make traditional snacks unique to the coastal region — such as taro delicacies made with rice slurry ground from glutinous rice, dried radishes sun-dried under the sun, and shield-leaf-covered treats using windbreak plants like hibiscus tiliaceus leaves. The tour will also allow trying local buns, radishes, pickled vegetables, and exploring the historic architecture and coastlines of the coastal area.
