Iron Man and Duffy are his magic creations—meet the mastermind behind Hong Kong Disneyland’s behind-the-scenes desserts

We all know that Disneyland is a place full of magic. Aside from the various attractions, every corner is filled with delightful surprises. There are shows to watch, games to play, and of course, desserts to enjoy as well. And at Hong Kong Disneyland, there's a mysterious magician who can turn even the toughest superhero like Iron Man or the adorable little bear Duffy into lifelike desserts that you just can’t bear to eat.

In January this year, the Iron Man area of Hong Kong Disneyland officially opened, and the most surprising highlight of the opening dinner was undoubtedly the dazzling array of Iron Man-themed desserts. From an Iron Man-shaped commander chocolate to an Iron Man lollipop cake and Iron Man-shaped biscuits, every item bore a 100% resemblance to the superhero. Behind these incredibly lifelike desserts is the magician—Pastry Chef Roger Luk from Hong Kong Disneyland.

With six years of experience at Hong Kong Disneyland, Roger Luk is mainly responsible for conceptualizing themed desserts, and these 15 Iron Man-themed desserts are all inspired by him. He said that developing the Iron Man-themed desserts took three months of brainstorming. Being an Iron Man fan himself, he personally studied the character’s traits and personality from the movies, and incorporated the details and features he observed into the desserts—like the signature red and gold color scheme, Iron Man’s chest reactor, and his thruster-powered palms. After repeated simulations and discussions with other chefs, the desserts were made more intricate and vivid.

Apart from the Iron Man series, Roger Luk has previously been in charge of developing desserts for Star Wars and Duffy. He turned multiple major Star Wars characters into chocolates, mousse cakes, and lollipop cakes. Among them, the complex BB-8 lollipop cake required collaboration among several chefs and took considerable effort. Additionally, the Duffy desserts, which would make girls scream with delight, also take on an adorable appearance under his skillful hands, decorated with plenty of soft pink tones that make you not want to eat them.
