Creative Spring Festival Couplets on Orchid Island Greet the New Year as Pan Anbang and Yu Sheng Story House Get a Makeover

To welcome the Year of the Snake in 2013, traditional art gets a fresh look through creative couplets that embody new life and new meanings, allowing visitors to feel the joyful and innovative atmosphere of Orchid Island during the Spring Festival. The Penghu National Scenic Area Administration, the Penghu County Government Tourism Department, the Penghu County Calligraphy Association, and other organizations jointly held the “Golden Snake Brings Joy, Ink Dances to Welcome Auspiciousness – Orchid Island Greets Guests with Creative Spring Festival Couplets” event on January 19 and February 2. In addition to distributing couplets handwritten by master calligraphers, they also gave the military dependents' villages a fresh look by decorating them with creative couplets.

The event includes two main themes: “Welcome Spring – Calligraphy and Spring Couplets Distribution” and “Creative Couplets to Decorate Homes.” The “Welcome Spring – Calligraphy and Spring Couplets Distribution” activity took place on January 19 (Saturday) from 9:00 to 12:00 at Penghu New World on Orchid Island (Penghu Tourism Industry Promotion Center). On the day of the event, master calligraphers from Taiwan such as Huang Changming and Yu Tongsheng, along with several local calligraphy experts from the county’s calligraphy association, joined hands to create free couplets for the public. Each person could receive one copy, while supplies lasted. The organizers also prepared 400 desktop New Year greeting cards to distribute to locals, who could also ask the calligraphy masters to write auspicious messages on them. No prior registration was required for this event—participants could sign up on-site.

 

The “Creative Couplets to Decorate Homes” activity is scheduled for February 2 (Saturday) from 9:00 to 12:00 at Duxing New Village. Organizers will mobilize volunteers and members to help spruce up the village, give it a fresh look, and put up creative couplets. In particular, the homes of Pan Anbang and the Yu Sheng Story House will greet guests with creatively themed couplets, adding joy and a new look to the military dependents’ villages, which are must-visit spots for tourists coming to Penghu.
