The limited-edition heart-shaped sky lanterns for couples at the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival are now open for registration

Now in its 15th year, the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in New Taipei City is one of Taiwan’s two major Lantern Festival folk events, attracting hundreds of thousands of domestic and international visitors every year. It was also selected by CNN as one of the 52 most exciting things to do in the world in 2013. The 2013 Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival will take place over three days: February 14, 17, and 24, and has launched activities such as “Shout Out Your Love,” “Love’s Representative Character,” and “A Thousand People Building Dreams.” In the “Shout Out Your Love” event, participants can upload their love declarations to the official Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival website before January 20 for a chance to release an 8TN heart-shaped sky lantern symbolizing deep affection during the Valentine’s Day exclusive lantern event on February 14, witnessed by all. Additionally, 120 4TN heart-shaped sky lanterns will be available for couples to release on Valentine’s Day. Registration is now open starting at 12:00 PM today (the 16th), with a fee of 200 NTD per pair.

The sky lantern festival on February 14, which coincides with the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, will be held at Jing Tong Elementary School under the theme “Starry Night, Happiness Soaring,” featuring a Valentine’s Day exclusive sky lantern release event. In line with this event, the online campaigns “Shout Out Your Love” and “Love’s Representative Character” have also commenced. The “Shout Out Your Love” activity calls on couples to upload their love declarations to the 2013 Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival official website from now until January 20. Selected declarations will go up for public voting from January 21 to 25, and the top three couples with the most votes will get to release 8TN heart-shaped sky lanterns during the Valentine’s exclusive lantern event, with their sweet love witnessed by all under the open sky.

 

The equally popular “Love’s Representative Character” voting campaign currently sees the character “伴” (companion) leading in votes. The voting period runs from now until January 25, and the most popular 2013 Love’s Representative Character will be announced on February 5. A super lucky winner will also be drawn from all participants to receive romantic prizes such as a classic room voucher at the Tamsui Fleur de Chine Hot Spring Resort.

During the second sky lantern release event on February 17 at Pingxi Junior High School, themed “Unique Present, Building a Great Future,” a massive 20TN mosaic sky lantern pieced together by the dreams of a thousand people will make its appearance. This large lantern will be formed by 2,000 colorful small sky lantern papers inscribed with wishes, forming the pattern “I’dTW.” The “A Thousand People Building Dreams” campaign to gather these wishes has also begun. Locations where the colorful small sky lantern papers can be collected include six spots: the Jing Tong Mining Life Museum in Pingxi District, New Taipei City; Qiaomen Western-style Pastry Cake Shop; Pingxi Painting Workshop; Pingxi Railway Story Museum; Shifen Visitor Center; and Shifen Railway Art Gallery. From now until January 25, the public can visit these designated locations to collect the colorful sky lantern papers and write down their wishes to help create this collective dream lantern. The sky lantern release event on the Lantern Festival, February 24, themed “Hand in Hand for Reunion, Celebrating the Lantern Festival,” will be held at Shifen Square, where 2,000 lanterns will be released in 10 waves.
