This year’s Chinese New Year holiday lasts nine days, and many people have already planned both domestic and international trips, kicking off the first major travel season of the year. Global online hotel service provider Hotels.com has released the most popular tourist destinations among Taiwanese travelers during the Spring Festival travel period (February 9–17), based on their search patterns. Compared to last year’s Spring Festival, Taiwanese people show a significantly higher willingness to travel abroad this year, with Tokyo retaining its top spot as the most desired overseas destination. Among domestic travel hotspots, Taipei City ranks first, followed by Kaohsiung.

With a longer lunar new year holiday this year, Taiwanese people are highly enthusiastic about traveling, and planning trips ahead of time has become a top priority for travelers. Due to the continued depreciation of the yen, traveling to Japan during the Spring Festival has become relatively more cost-effective. According to Hotels.com’s survey, three out of the top five most popular international vacation destinations for Taiwanese travelers are in Japan: Tokyo and Osaka ranking first and second, respectively, and Kyoto ranking fourth. Notably, compared to last year, searches for Osaka and Kyoto have surged by 230% and 221%, respectively, while searches for Tokyo, which remains the most searched overseas destination, increased by 136%, showing that the travel boom to Japan continues to grow year after year.
In addition to enjoying Japan’s romantic snowscapes, tropical destinations are also highly popular. Bangkok ranks as the third most sought-after international travel destination. Not only are prices low, but budget airlines also make it easier for travelers to enjoy warm sunshine, relaxation, and shopping at an affordable cost. Since the launch of direct flights from Taipei to Seoul in April 2012, Seoul has remained consistently popular, ranking fifth among favorite travel destinations.
