As spring warms and flowers bloom, the urge to admire cherry blossoms grows stronger too. In recent years, the cherry blossom craze in Taiwan has been just as intense as in Japan. Many cherry blossom viewing spots are always packed with visitors. With the growing popularity of cherry blossom appreciation and tree planting, the cherry blossoms have bloomed more vibrantly year after year. Don’t miss out on the many great cherry blossom spots and events across Taiwan this season.
This year’s cherry blossoms are blooming earlier than usual, and famous flower-viewing spots and events across the island are kicking off one after another. Details are as follows:
2013Yangmingshan Flower Festival
Location: Yangmingshan Park
Dates: February 12 to March 18
Event Details: The Yangmingshan Flower Festival kicks off as spring approaches. This annual event, starting during this year’s Lunar New Year period, features key viewing spots such as the Flower Clock, fountains, themed gardens, azalea and camellia gardens, cherry blossom groves, peach blossom groves, Shuiliantian Cave, and the statue of Wang Yangming. In addition to cherry blossoms, there’s also a stunning floral feast featuring peonies, camellias, peach blossoms, and hydrangeas.
◎ Main Types of Cherry Blossoms and Blooming Periods:
Mountain Cherry: Early-blooming – Late December to Late January
Mid-blooming – Early to Late February
Late-blooming – Late February to Mid-March
Double-flowered Mountain Cherry: Late January to Early February
Showa Cherry: Mid to Late February
Yoshino Cherry: Late February to Early March

2013New Taipei Group Cherry Blossom Gathering
Locations:Sanchi, Tamsui, Wulai, Shihcheng, and other areas
Dates: February 4 to March 31
Event Details: The “New Taipei Group Cherry Blossom Gathering,” held from February 4 to March 31, features several cherry blossom avenues and hidden gems: Sanchi Dahulu Road, Beixin Road, Qingshan Road, SanSheng Trail; Tamsui Wuji Tianyuan Temple and Shuxingli Cherry Blossom Avenue; Wulai Scenic Area and Xiluoan Industrial Road; Shiding Erge Park and Provincial Highway 47; Xizhi Dajianshan Trail; Ruifang Gold Museum; Pingxi Forest Recreation Area and Huan Shan Road; Sanxia Chajiao and Provincial Highway 109... These are all great destinations for families and cherry blossom enthusiasts both locally and abroad.
In addition to a series of events, there’s also the “Great Cherry Photography Contest” and the “Cherry Blossom Wish Lottery.” You can pick up the “This Is How You Enjoy Cherry Blossoms” guidebook at district offices and tourist centers. Along with information on New Taipei City’s cherry blossom spots, routes, and special offers at participating shops, visitors who collect stamps from any five districts during the event period can enter the “Cherry Blossom Wish” lottery, with total prizes exceeding NT$500,000.

2013Wuling Farm Cherry Blossom Festival
Location: Wuling Farm
Dates: February 10 to March 5
Event Details: From February 10 to March 5 during the 102nd Wuling Farm Cherry Blossom Festival, visitor entry will be limited to 5,000 people per day.
To alleviate past traffic congestion during the cherry blossom season, this year’s Wuling Farm Cherry Blossom Festival includes pre-booked shuttle bus services and controlled numbers of individual and tour group visitors—hoping to ensure visitors no longer have to endure traffic jams just to enjoy the flowers.

2013Nine Clans Cherry Blossom Festival
Location: Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village
Dates: February 1 to February 28
Event Details: The Nine Clans Cherry Blossom Festival attracts numerous visitors each year to admire the cherry blossoms, becoming an annual highlight at the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. A variety of cherry blossom-related activities are on offer. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of cultural exchange between the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village in Sun Moon Lake and the Japan Cherry Blossom Association in 2013, cherry blossom enthusiasts can witness the beauty of both daytime and nighttime blooms together.

Nantou Aowanda Cherry Blossom Season
Location: Nantou Aowanda Forest Recreation Area
Dates: January 31 to March 15
Event Details: Cherry blossoms in Aowanda have already begun blooming in late January.
The most beautiful period for mountain cherries (single-petal varieties) is from late January to early February, while double-petal cherries (double-flowered varieties) are at their peak from mid to late February. The Mist Valley cherry trees will be in full bloom by mid-March and can also be seen along Provincial Highway 83 and the Wanda Power Plant. The cherry blossom spectacle waits for no one—come to Aowanda to enjoy a romantic feast under the cherry trees.
Alishan Cherry Blossom Season
Location: Alishan National Park
Dates: February 1 to March 20
Event Details: Early-blooming Taiwan cherry blossoms started flowering in late January, with the full bloom expected to occur from mid-February to early March. Ryukyu cherry blossoms were about 30% in bloom in late January and will reach full bloom in early February. Yoshino cherry blossoms bloom later, with their full bloom anticipated in early March.
With a total of 5,000 cherry trees in the forest, the view is truly breathtaking. In addition to the main species such as Taiwan cherry, Ryukyu cherry, and Yoshino cherry, there are also thousand-island cherry, Oshima cherry, and Benzaiten cherry varieties.
Yilan Qilan Makau Cherry Blossom Festival
Location: Yilan Qilan Forest Area
Dates: February 1 to March 10
Event Details: Qilan Taiwan cherry blossoms were in full bloom by the end of January, with the blooming period expected to last until early February. Pink Beauty blossoms are expected to bloom from early to mid-February. The roadside trees along the way are also spectacularly beautiful and worth appreciating in detail.
Can be combined with a visit to Qilan Mingtan Sacred Tree area. In addition to admiring the delicate beauty of the cherry blossoms, you can also enjoy the majestic and sturdy presence of the trees.

Taitung Taimali Qingshan Farm
Location: Taitung Taimali Qingshan Farm
Dates: February 1 to February 28
Event Details: Taitung Taimali Qingshan Farm boasts a rich variety of cherry blossoms, with around 400 to 500 trees including Taiwan cherry, double-petal cherry, and Yoshino cherry currently about 60% in bloom.
Taiyuan Cherry Blossom Corridor
Location: Greenway between Section 1 and Section 2 of Taiyuan Road, North District, Taichung City
Dates: February 10 to March 5
Event Details: Over 200 cherry blossom trees have been planted along the Greenway of Taiyuan Road in Mingde Li, North District, Taichung. These trees will bloom abundantly from February to March, with the climax of the Cherry Blossom Festival taking place around the Lantern Festival, creating a rare and beautiful urban spectacle. Double-flowered mountain cherries in February and Yoshino cherries in March will bloom in succession—something to look forward to!
Taichung Dakeng Zhumuxiang
Location: Next to Shanbenyan in Zhumuxiang, Beitun District, Taichung City
Dates: February 10 to March 5
Event Details: The cherry blossom grove in Zhumuxiang, Mingde Li, Taichung Dakeng, consists of privately planted cherry trees. Mr. Wang, a local resident, started planting cherry trees eight years ago and has allowed free public entry to admire the blossoms every year when they are in full bloom—much to the delight of cherry blossom enthusiasts!
Nantou Caopingtou
Location: Yushan Sightseeing Tea Garden, Caopingtou
Dates: January 20 to March 5
Event Details: Caopingtou has a history of over 20 years of cherry blossom cultivation, forming a beautiful cherry blossom tunnel that enchants visitors. Following the promotion of sightseeing farms by the provincial government, Caopingtou has developed into a leisure destination. Local cherry trees have now formed a mature grove, and this year, the local farmers’ association and township office have encouraged farmers to plant an additional 300-plus cherry trees!
