The 2013 Tainan Meilin Firefly Season will be held from April 20 to May 12 along the Wulong Firefly Trail in Meilin. The public is invited to visit Tainan Meilin to admire the scenery, enjoy local food, and experience the most beautiful firefly evening event of spring in Tainan. This year’s opening event will take place this Saturday, April 20, at 3:00 PM in the parking lot of Wulong Temple in Meilin. Highlights include a live performance by Golden Melody Award-winning singer Yan Yongneng, free limited tastings of mango ice cream, and exciting activities such as hiking and firefly-watching.

Every year from April to May is the ecological season when fireflies are active in swarms. Currently, over 13 species of fireflies have been found in the Meilin area, including the black-winged firefly, red-chested black-winged firefly, large black firefly, black firefly, mountain window firefly, red-chested window firefly, and Taiwan window firefly, among which the black-winged firefly is the most prized for viewing. The Tainan Meilin Firefly Season is not just a tourism event—it is the result of years of ecological conservation efforts by the government and local residents, and also serves as an ideal venue for practicing “low-carbon travel and eco-friendly environmentalism.” The Meilin fireflies are a precious ecological asset that requires the joint care of all participants. Please follow the three “no’s” of firefly watching: no capturing, no strong flashlight beams, and no loud noise. To allow fireflies time to rest and breed and to ensure visitor safety, it is advised not to enter the mountains after 7:30 PM. Additionally, during the event period, driving or riding vehicles up the mountain is strictly prohibited. Everyone is urged to cooperate in preserving this rare ecological resource.
This year’s firefly season has three major highlights. The first is the integration with main bus lines. The bus rapid transit system allows visitors to take the Green Main Line to Yujing and then transfer to the Green 22 bus directly to Er’cengping in Meilin. In addition to avoiding parking shortages, taking public transportation also holds significant meaning for reducing carbon emissions, protecting the environment, and caring for the Earth.
The second highlight is the first-ever combination of hiking activities with firefly watching. This year, hiking events will be held on Saturdays and Sundays during the event period. Guided by tour leaders, visitors will hike along the Meifeng Ancient Trail to the tea garden firefly-viewing area. Along the way, they can enjoy bird and plant ecology, gaze at the Tainan cityscape and cloud waterfalls, and watch the sunset. Arriving at the firefly-viewing area at dusk offers the perfect opportunity to see the glow of the fireflies. If there’s still time after descending the mountain, visitors can head to local restaurants to enjoy a flavorful meal of plum chicken, completing a slow-paced, eco-friendly half-day trip.
The third highlight is the combination with nighttime photography. Capturing fireflies requires considerable equipment and skill—most people can’t take home glowing memories. This year, from May 4 to 5, experts in nighttime photography will be invited to teach techniques and necessary gear for shooting night scenes and fireflies, along with hands-on guidance during actual shoots on the mountain. It is hoped that through this opportunity, more beautiful photos of Meilin’s fireflies can be taken and treasured by those who love them.
