From mid-April to mid-May, when fireflies romantically flutter through the mountains, turning the forests into “new summer Christmas trees,” the New Taipei City Agriculture Bureau recommends 22 “firefly photography spots.” They are inviting photography enthusiasts and families of all ages to come together to discover the beauty of these new summer Christmas trees, and have also organized three professional eco-guided tours to help everyone learn about and protect fireflies.

Fireflies thrive in natural environments with clean air and water, ample ground cover, and minimal light pollution. There are over 20 species of fireflies in our city, accounting for more than one-third of Taiwan’s total firefly species. Areas such as Sanxia, Tucheng, Xindian, Wulai, Pinglin, Shuangxi, Ruifang, Xizhi, and Pingxi all offer the chance to witness the romantic glow of these new summer Christmas trees. Photography enthusiasts can plan their visits between mid-April and mid-May according to their own schedules.
Three consecutive Saturday evenings—April 20, April 27, and May 4—will feature Firefly Eco-Guided Tours. This Saturday, professional guides will lead participants to search for “little sky lanterns” in the forests of Pingxi Old Street. On April 27, the tour will head to the Sanxia Yuanshan Eco-Trail to find nature’s sparkling neon lights. On May 4, the adventure continues to the Quchi area in Xindian District to discover mountain fireworks.
To protect these precious firefly habitats, do not use flash when taking photos. Weekends tend to be crowded, so consider visiting on weekdays for night shoots. Firefly watchers should remember to turn off flashlights, stay safe, avoid making noise, and wear light, natural-colored long-sleeved clothing. Most importantly, do not catch fireflies. Beyond enjoying their beauty, it’s vital to protect them and preserve their ecological habitat. Conservation efforts require all of our contributions to ensure that future generations can continue to witness the magical glow of these new summer Christmas trees every year and keep the radiant beauty of fireflies alive.
