Sleep in a wine barrel nestled in the Black Forest

In the town of Sasbachwalden in Germany’s Black Forest region, the Schlafen im Weinfass wine barrel lodging sits atop a hill overlooking vineyards and wineries. The farmhouse was built in 1665, and grape cultivation and winemaking began in the early 20th century. After four generations, the estate is not only known for its wines but also for its brandy and liqueurs, which have been enjoyed by Black Forest residents for over a century. So the resourceful winemaking family hauled their large barrels up the hill and created an attraction: “sleeping in a wine barrel in the vineyard.” The hillside now features horizontally placed sleeping and lounge barrels, each just big enough for two single beds. Yet the novelty of sleeping in a barrel, gazing out at the vineyards and Black Forest, offers a unique experience for wine enthusiasts who crave more than just a tasting or a winery tour.
