Château Laurier Hotel

Fairmont Le Château Frontenac

 

With its bronze-colored roof and brick-red exterior, the fortress-like Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is a world-renowned architectural icon and the most prominent landmark in Quebec. The site of the château was once home to a real castle in the 17th century—Château St. Louis—which served as the residence of the Governor General of New France and also functioned as the administrative and military command center. Château St. Louis was later destroyed in battle, and after several changes, by the end of the 19th century, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company gathered a group of Montreal merchants aiming to create an extremely luxurious high-end hotel. Thus, the new château-style hotel officially opened in 1893. To commemorate the Comte de Frontenac, the Governor General of New France who resided in Quebec from 1672 to 1698, the hotel was named after him.
