Bangkok, Thailand, crowned the world's best city for tourism

Previously, we shared with netizens the world's best cities to live in, where Melbourne claimed the top spot for the third time. Today, we’re introducing the world’s best city for tourism, based on an online poll conducted by Travel & Leisure travel magazine published by American Express. The results named Bangkok as the 2013 World's Best City for Tourism, while Chiang Mai, the largest city in northern Thailand, ranked tenth. Among Asian cities, Bangkok took first place and Chiang Mai came in third.

Bangkok scored 90.4 points overall, beating out second-place Istanbul, Turkey, and third-place Florence, Italy. Cape Town, South Africa, and Kyoto, Japan, came in fourth and fifth, respectively. Rounding out the sixth to tenth spots were Rome, Italy; Charleston, USA; Barcelona, Spain...、France’s Paris and Thailand’s Chiang Mai. In this category of global tourism rankings, this is the third consecutive year that Bangkok has ranked at the top.

 

MasterCard, in its 2013 guide to the world’s top 20 vacation cities, ranked Bangkok as the best vacation city in the world based on international visitor arrivals. This marks the first time an Asian city has claimed the top spot since the travel guide’s inception in 2010.

 

TripAdvisor ranked Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, as the No. 1 city among Asia’s 25 top vacation destinations chosen by travelers, while Chiang Mai came in sixth. Additionally, in the list of the world’s best resort islands, Koh Samui ranked ninth and Phuket ranked fifteenth. Among Asian resort islands, Koh Samui came in fourth and Phuket ranked fifth.
