The stunning autumn foliage at Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, Kyoto

Previously, we introduced some famous maple-viewing spots in Kyoto. Did it make you eager to book a flight and head there right away? Today, we’re sharing another super classic must-visit attraction in Kyoto—Togetsukyo Bridge—to give you another great option.

The Arashiyama area is home to over 500 cherry blossom trees. When they bloom every spring, clusters of blossoms resemble blowing snow, delicately dotting the distant mountains and valleys. Togetsukyo Bridge spans the Katsura River (also known as the Oi River). The origin of its name is said to date back to when Emperor Kameyama, seeing the bright moon above, was inspired to name it. Togetsukyo Bridge is practically a landmark of Arashiyama. Its current steel structure was rebuilt in 1934, maintaining the same design as the old bridge. Shooting the bridge with cherry blossoms in the foreground has become one of Arashiyama’s iconic scenes. Meanwhile, the spectacular autumn foliage is equally renowned, making it a top tourist spot in Kyoto during the fall.
