Kyoto sees tourist surge in Arashiyama as floodwaters recede

Areas of Kyoto, Japan, that were hit by Typhoon Khanun days ago have gradually resumed operations after days of cleanup, with most businesses reopening and local tourist traffic returning to its usual vibrancy. Travelers planning to visit Kyoto for autumn foliage need not worry about their itineraries being affected. However, the area beneath Arashiyama’s Togetsukyo Bridge, which nearly flooded during the storm, remains muddy and will take some time to recover its pre-disaster beauty.

Although Kyoto’s Arashiyama, a renowned autumn foliage destination, was hit by typhoon rains and flooding, just one day after the waters subsided, numerous tourists had already flocked back to the area. During the storm, Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama remained unharmed, though the muddy areas and accumulated debris beneath it still require cleanup. Meanwhile, Nanzen-ji Temple, which suffered from mudflow damage, has been actively clearing away the debris. Locals hope to restore Arashiyama’s iconic autumn foliage scenery for all to see as soon as possible.

Nanzen-ji Temple is a structure from Japan’s Kamakura period, characterized by its grand and imposing style that exudes a simple yet vibrant Zen atmosphere. Along the path from the Nanzen-ji Temple approach to the mountain gate, almost every shop displays a yudofu (tofu hot pot) banner. Visitors coming here in autumn can dine at a courtyard restaurant, savoring the famous yudofu while admiring the swaying maple trees in the sunlight.
