【Weekend in Taiwan】Four Ultra-Popular Autumn Floral Displays Compete in Splendor

The Guting Riverside Park, renovated by the Taipei City Government’s Department of Rapid Transit Systems, features floral carpets designed with motifs of water ripples and Hakka terraced fields. These include yellow cosmos, salvia, and angelonia. The elegant, winding lines evoke the riverside charm of the park, while the vibrant colors reflect the brilliance and traditional beauty of Hakka fabric.

The ultra-popular Northeast Coast autumn event — the “Caoling Historic Trail Silvergrass Season” — which has been running for 12 years, will conclude on December 1. This year’s theme, “Dancing Winds and Flying Silvergrass,” extends beyond the classic 8.5-kilometer route of the Caoling Historic Trail. Special weekend activities include “Caoling’s Old-World Charm with Creative Costumes,” “Weekly Lucky Draws Along the Historic Trail,” “Tea Served by the Innkeeper,” “Mini Games Along the Trail,” “Rubbing and Dough Figurine DIY Workshops,” “Peaceful Porridge at Dali Tian Gong Temple,” and “Check-In at i-Like Lingjiu Mountain for Prizes.” These are paired with travel agency deals and discounts from nearby merchants, allowing visitors to experience the refreshing beauty of “Dancing Winds and Flying Silvergrass” starting from the Caoling Historic Trail.

Taiwan’s central region’s most beautiful autumn event — the Xinshe Flower Sea — runs from now until December 8 at the Farm (No. 2) of the Taichung City Seed Improvement and Propagation Station in Xinshe District. In addition to 30 hectares of breathtaking floral landscapes, this year features eight elaborately planned thematic pavilions: “Orchids Worth Seeing,” “Rice in Every Direction,” “Flowers Blooming with Happiness,” “Happy and Complete Countryside,” “Traveling Lifestyle,” “Green Energy and Forest Living,” “Essence of Herbal Medicine,” and “Leisure Agriculture.” There are also five exhibition areas: “2013 Taichung International Floral Tapestry Festival,” “Prosperous Orchard,” “Taichung City Agricultural Specialties Marketing Area,” “Taichung City Famous Stalls and Local Products Marketing Area,” and “Xinshe District Agricultural Specialties and Food Area.” These combine the leisurely atmosphere of the mountain-city of central Taiwan with vast floral landscapes, offering visitors a double treat for the mind and eyes.

The annual Qiaotou “Floral Field Festivities” series, now in its 7th year, has successfully drawn tens of thousands of visitors each year, reaching 600,000 last year. This year, the Qiaotou District Office has planted over 40 hectares of cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers, and marigolds across the area, arranging them into five giant themed floral tapestries. The floral season runs from now until December 8.
