Along Gōngyì Road, one of the prime foodie battlegrounds in Taichung City, Forty Café is nestled in a quiet alley off the main street. Originally working in the import business, Ms. Yao started Forty Café when she reached the milestone age of forty, with the café's name "Forty" referring to the age at which she transitioned careers — a beautiful commemoration of the saying “a woman at forty is like a blooming flower.” A breakfast lover herself, Ms. Yao insists that breakfast must be hearty. She also noticed that most breakfast shops in Taiwan either serve overly fast and simple meals or are too refined and expensive. Therefore, Forty Café offers customers a nutritious brunch and a cozy, laid-back dining environment.

Forty Café occupies only a small section of a long storefront on the first floor of a residential building. Without an overly flashy sign, first-time visitors need to keep their eyes peeled to avoid missing it. The high-ceilinged space features floor-to-ceiling windows adorned with intermittent gold-patterned lattice window decals, adding layers to the greenery visible from inside — some clear and bright, others faintly visible, making the window views more intriguing. The bar facing the windows is fitted with rattan-backed high stools, echoing the natural simplicity outside. The first-floor space is based around a purple palette, paired with light and airy white and soft earth tones. The loft boldly features purple walls, with white painted floral patterns on the floor, complemented by nearby black tassels, exuding a strong lounge-bar-style lazy ambiance.

Ms. Yao explained that purple is a composite color, radiating the beauty of a blend of red and blue, much like her own journey transitioning careers at the age of forty, which involved many life stages. The café’s brunch offerings include freshly squeezed juices, high-fiber salads, seafood or meat-based mains, as well as bread from Taichung’s renowned Tángběn Bakery. Meals are paired with a handmade coffee or floral fruit tea, allowing customers to start their day with a satisfied belly and a good mood.

The restaurant space is intentionally integrated with the surroundings of the Green Boulevard, bringing a relaxed vibe into the café so that customers can enjoy breakfast in a stress-free state of mind — making it easier for the body to absorb nutrients. Only at Forty Café can you truly understand that breakfast is meant to be savored.
