Spring Flower Festival in Thailand: Admire the Lotus Bloom at the Red Lotus Sea Festival until March

From October to March each year in Kumphawapi District, Udon Thani Province, Thailand, a vast freshwater lake comes alive, turning into a vivid and beautiful sea of red as the lotuses in the lake bloom abundantly, dyeing the water surface a brilliant red. During this time, the entire lake transforms into a large recreational paradise.

Nong Harn Lake is the most important water source of the Nam Pao River. The entire lake area is rich in fish, wildlife, and aquatic plants, serving as a vital lifeline for the local community. After a long period of dormancy, the lotuses begin to sprout in October, quickly growing into leaves and buds. By December, the lake becomes a stunning expanse of vibrant red, becoming a favorite spot for locals. The lotus flowers bloom from dawn until noon, with the blooming season lasting until March. The best time to admire the red lotus sea is between 6:00 AM and 11:00 AM when the lotus buds are at their most beautiful. However, boats are available all day from Ban Diem Village in Kumphawapi District, Udon Thani Province, to take visitors to view the lotuses. While enjoying the red lotus sea, tourists can also shop for the best local products in Udon Thani Province. Udon Thani is located 564 kilometers northwest of Bangkok and can be reached via Highway 2.
