Attention Japanese train enthusiasts！ To boost tourism in Japan’s Tohoku region, JR East Japan’s tourist train “SL Ginga” will officially resume operations on April 12. The 73-year-old, recently restored C58 No. 239 steam locomotive will run between Hanamaki and Kamaishi on the Kamaishi Line. In April, the planned schedule includes departures from Hanamaki to Kamaishi every Saturday and on April 29, and from Kamaishi to Hanamaki every Sunday and on April 30 — both as one round trip every two days.

The JR East Japan “SL Ginga” has scheduled runs on Saturdays and Sundays in May until September. Specific dates include May 5 (Hanamaki to Kamaishi) and May 6 (Kamaishi to Hanamaki); all Saturdays and Sundays in June; most Sundays in July except July 20, plus additional runs on July 29 (Hanamaki to Kamaishi) and July 21 & 30 (Kamaishi to Hanamaki); every Saturday and Sunday in August, with additional runs on August 5 (Hanamaki to Kamaishi) and August 6 (Kamaishi to Hanamaki); every Saturday and most Sundays in September except September 15, plus additional runs on September 22 (Hanamaki to Kamaishi) and September 15 & 23 (Kamaishi to Hanamaki).

The fare for JR East Japan’s “SL Ginga” consists of a reserved seat ticket and a regular fare ticket. Tickets purchased before March 31 cost 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children for the reserved seat, while tickets purchased from April 1 onwards cost 820 yen for adults and 410 yen for children. The regular fare for the Hanamaki to Kamaishi route is 1,620 yen. Reserved seats can be pre-booked up to one month in advance of the travel date.
