1600 paper pandas move to National Theater & Concert Hall for a "hyaluronic acid" touch-up before reuniting with the public

The widely visited "1600 Pandas World Tour—Taipei" public art exhibition has ended its run at Taipei City Hall Plaza and will move to the National Theater & Concert Hall on March 14. The most popular photo zone draws crowds every day. To ensure these “on-duty” pandas make a beautiful return to greet the public at the National Theater & Concert Hall, the organizers invited Zheng Feiwen, design director of Rainy International, to demonstrate the process of restoring the paper pandas. Zheng explained that the repair process begins with sanding down the damaged and uneven areas of the paper pandas using abrasive paper. Next, a special “panda hyaluronic acid”—a mixture of filler and glue—is applied to smooth over the wounds. After another round of sanding, an eco-friendly waterproof paint is applied, effectively giving the pandas something like a dose of Botox, restoring their faded and chipped appearance to its former glory.

The Department of Information and Tourism stated that the exhibition at Taipei City Hall has concluded successfully, attracting over one million visitors. The second phase will run from March 14 to March 30 at the Arts and Cultural Plaza of the National Theater & Concert Hall. From 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily during the exhibition period, Formosan black bears made of paper will also join the display at the plaza. The curators have also planned various surprise elements to make the “bear summit” even more exciting.

This exhibition specially invited artist Paulo Grangeon to create paper sculptures of Taiwan’s most iconic protected animal—the Formosan black bear—hoping to raise local awareness about conservation issues through the display of 200 paper black bears. After the exhibition, these paper pandas and black bears will be auctioned off for charity, with proceeds going to animal protection and ecological conservation organizations.
