How to enjoy the firefly season: Alishan Forest Railway’s firefly-viewing tours now open

The Alishan National Scenic Area Administration has launched this year’s “Dancing with Fireflies” and “Trail Exploration” programs, featuring four sessions of the “Spring–Summer Firefly Stroll” event on April 19, 26, 29, and May 13, as well as four sessions of the “Trail Exploration Firefly Stroll” event on April 27, 29, May 13, and June 7. The events will be held at popular firefly gathering spots such as Guanghua Dengbenzi Recreation Area, Yuantan Nature Ecology Park, Fengshan, and Ruili, as well as renowned trails including the Youth Ridge Trail, Wild Ginger Flower Creek Trail, Fengshan Observation Deck, and Yawumas Trail.

 

The Alishan National Scenic Area Administration stated that this year, in collaboration with the Alishan Forest Railway and local homestay operators, two two-day, one-night package tours have been planned for April 29 and May 13, allowing participants to experience a series of firefly-themed activities including the Alishan Forest Railway, firefly viewing, and trail exploration. Each session of the Alishan Forest Railway train can accommodate 160 people, and online registration is open. The cost per person is NT$1,999, which includes round-trip train fare from Chiayi to Jiaoliping, homestay accommodation, as well as lunch and dinner on the first day and breakfast and lunch on the second day. Free shuttle service from Jiaoliping Train Station to the Ruili-area accommodation is provided by the homestay operator. Train seats and homestay rooms are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

The administration also noted that the first 100 registrants for each session of the “Dancing with Fireflies and Trail Exploration” series will receive a special commemorative gift. In addition to the spring–summer firefly events, the administration has seen successful results in its recent efforts to revive the autumn–winter firefly population, and plans to hold three autumn–winter firefly experience camps between October and November this year.
