Taiwan, once an agrarian society, saw its government—shortsighted and indifferent—for years sacrifice agriculture, colluding with conglomerates and local powers in pursuit of short-term economic gains. To rouse the indifference of officials and the public, a farmer’s son from Erlin, Changhua, secretly made and placed 17 “bombs” across Taipei, shocking all walks of life. The media called him the “Rice Bomber.” His name was Yang Ju-men.

Yang Ju-men grew up farming with his grandparents in Changhua. The fields were their only lifelong possession and an unchanging faith through generations. Yet, in order to join the World Trade Organization, the government tricked farmers into leaving their land fallow. What had been their livelihood became a bargaining chip for politicians and corporations, turning lush farmland into industrial zones. Yang watched as his grandparents, who had toiled their whole lives, ended up with nothing.

He wrote to major media outlets, hoping to shed light on the plight of Taiwan’s farmers through public exposure, but his letters repeatedly went unanswered. He visited government offices at all levels, only to be met with resistance, bureaucratic buck-passing, and evasion of responsibility. (

Seeing no hope for change within the system, Yang Ju-men knew that only revolution could secure a future for Taiwan’s agriculture.
