Hong Kong’s one-Michelin-starred Cantonese dim sum restaurant Tim Ho Wan collaborated with Taipei’s Grand Hyatt on dim sum and afternoon tea in July last year. In recent years, it has become a must-try local Hong Kong dish for Taiwanese travelers. The original Mong Kok flagship store has relocated, with many foreign visitors now heading to the Central branch instead. Other branches such as the North Point, Citygate Mall, and Sham Shui Po locations also attract long queues of diners.

Tim Ho Wan founder and head chef Mak Kwai-pui, whose one-Michelin-starred restaurant hails from Hong Kong, tested the waters in Taiwan last year and has plans to expand here. The Taipei branch is expected to be the second overseas location after Singapore, with the site currently set at the intersection of Park Road and Zhongxiao West Road. It is scheduled to open at the end of July or early August. Tim Ho Wan’s dim sum is known for its reasonable prices, ranging from NT$50 to NT$90. Whether it can maintain Hong Kong-level affordability in Taiwan will surely be a key point of interest. Fans of Tim Ho Wan won’t need to fly to Hong Kong to enjoy its offerings—whether long queues will form during the initial opening phase remains to be seen.
