Tokyo’s metro system is highly convenient, and the Yamanote Line, with its loop-running operation, has become an important railway line connecting multiple districts of Tokyo. Recently, JR East announced that it will introduce new train models in 2015, significantly increasing the number of priority seats and spaces for baby strollers. The design of the train front and the style of the headlights will also be markedly different.

This new type of commuter train is called the “E235 series.” JR East announced that it will gradually replace old models with the new ones over a period of four to five years, with the update expected to be completed before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The original train had 20 priority seats, but the new model will increase this number to 29. The seating capacity per car will also be increased, and LCD screens will be installed above the windows for displaying animations and advertising information. The distinctive green livery on the front of the train becomes a hallmark of the E235 series, making it instantly recognizable as a Yamanote Line train.
