The 2014 FIFA World Cup has come to an end. The powerhouse German national team, with each player bringing their own unique skills, clinched the world title thanks to their solid playing style. Aside from their impressive football skills, many believe Germany’s training base in Brazil, “Campo Bahia,” played an absolutely crucial role.

This German team village, situated in the Santo Andre settlement in southern Bahia, cost nearly NT$1.3 billion, funded through donations raised by the German Football Association from corporate sources. The village spans approximately 15,000 square meters, including 14 villas, 65 rooms, a training field, swimming pool, gym, private beach, and media room. Its remote and tranquil location requires crossing a river to reach.

Germany also self-funded the construction of a hotel, medical center, football pitch, and even paved a road. During the construction period, a large number of local residents were hired, creating significant employment opportunities. In addition, to better integrate with the local culture, several Brazilian artists were commissioned to design parts of the project.

After the tournament, Germany has decided to leave all the infrastructure of the village in place locally. In addition to being used again as a team village for the 2016 Brazil Olympics, “Campo Bahia” will continue to operate as a hotel, using its claim to fame — “where the World Cup champions lived” — as a selling point. The presence of “Campo Bahia” is expected to boost the economy and job market of Porto Seguro. Other facilities will be made available for use by the local community.
