Since 1972, the Merlion statue has stood as a guardian of the Lion City for 40 years. Legend has it that in the 11th century, a prince from the Srivijaya Kingdom landed in Singapore and spotted a lion, prompting him to name the place “Singapura.” “Singa” means lion in Malay, and “Pura” means city — which is how Singapore came to be known as the “Lion City.” The fish tail symbolizes Singapore’s former name, Temasek, meaning “Sea Town,” and illustrates how the city grew from a small trading port into the prosperous metropolis it is today.

Standing at 8.6 meters tall and weighing 70 tons, the Merlion statue was created in 1972 by the late renowned Singaporean sculptor Lim Nang Seng using concrete and then covered with ceramic scales. For the past 30 years, it quietly guarded the mouth of the Singapore River until urban redevelopment in 2002 led to its relocation to a spot just 120 meters away from its original location. The new site spans 2,500 square meters — four times larger than the original — and features a water-themed design. At night, the statue is illuminated to create a vivid and spectacular illusion of floating on the water. It’s an unmissable iconic attraction for visitors to Singapore.
