The "must-have" sauce in Taichung breakfasts that Taipei can now enjoy too!

Areas near campuses are always hotspots for foodies, with unique eateries opening one after another. Not only do they experiment with bold flavors, but their prices are also the most affordable on the planet. On the slope of Shuiyuan Street near the side entrance of Tamkang University, a newly opened shop called Pie Shop has proven quite appealing. After being featured in the media recently, it became an instant hit, with sales doubling overnight. The shop also gets creative by combining "Dongquan Chili Sauce," a staple in Taichung breakfasts, with cabbage wraps to create a new flavor.

Pie Shop originally sold hot-pressed toast and wraps, but after being featured in the media, many Tamkang students flocked to the shop, causing sales to at least double. As a result, the owner had to temporarily stop selling the more time-consuming hot-pressed toast to focus on making a variety of wrap flavors. "We're also in talks about franchising, and we might open branches in Xinzhuang and Banqiao in the future."

Among the new offerings, the cabbage wrap is particularly healthy, making it a favorite among many women and vegetarians. Unlike another popular item, the "Melted Cheese Wrap," this dish takes a healthier route. Though it may not look as "indulgent," it’s just as generously filled, offering a satisfying bite every time. Paired with "Dongquan Chili Sauce," the flavor becomes even more aromatic, making it hard to stop at just one bite.

People in northern Taiwan may not be familiar with "Dongquan Chili Sauce," but in reality, this chili sauce is very common in Taichung. Many well-known eateries specifically use it as their signature sauce. However, aside from central Taiwan, it’s not widely available elsewhere. So if you’re curious about the charm of this chili sauce, you don’t have to travel all the way to central Taiwan—there’s a place in Tamsui where you can give it a try!
