Visiting Miaoli isn’t just about enjoying the tung blossom “May Snow” — come autumn, you can also admire chrysanthemums. Every year in November and December, it’s the season when snow-white and golden-yellow Hangzhou chrysanthemums bloom vigorously on the Jiuhu Plateau in Tongluo Township, Miaoli County. From afar, the hills and slopes of Tongluo look as if they’re covered with a blanket of white snow, forming a unique sea of flowers that brings vibrant vitality to the already cooling weather.

Miaoli’s Tongluo is the largest producer of Hangzhou chrysanthemums in Taiwan. The plateau terrain, along with large temperature differences and high humidity, plus the reddish-brown acidic soil, provide an ideal environment for the growth of Hangzhou chrysanthemums. Blessed with these unique geographical and climatic advantages, the chrysanthemums here thrive and are of premium quality. This year, the planted area has expanded from 15 hectares last year to 26 hectares. The round, chubby little chrysanthemums, together with other bright flowers like sunflowers and cosmos planted in nearby nurseries, create a scene where bursts of fresh floral fragrance waft through the air — a beautiful floral feast for both the eyes and nose. Additionally, the Tongluo Township Farmers’ Association also noted:The chrysanthemum flower season is relatively short, with the best viewing period lasting only until early December, so flower enthusiasts should plan their visit accordingly.
