No plans for the weekend? Why not head into the mountains for a relaxing green getaway? Since 2015, Taipei City Government’s Department of Urban Development has organized free weekend guided tours of 16 mountain-friendly trails. Led by trail experts, these tours let you experience the beauty of forest paths while learning about local ecology, history, and culture—making your hike a deeper journey.

Taipei is surrounded by mountains, offering many scenic forest trails that showcase unique views of the city. Popular routes include Shilin District’s Tianmu Historic Trail along the historic Green Water Pipe, Neihu District’s Bihu Trail known for its mining-themed design, and globally recognized Xinyi District trails like Xiangshan and Hushan.

To encourage more weekend mountain adventures, the guided trail service has been upgraded. Starting January 17, 2015, there’s one free guided tour every weekend, increasing to two during school holidays. The goal is to attract family outings, with “small and intimate” sessions limited to 30 people per tour for a better experience.
